Health trip. Digital health startups pulled in a record-breaking $57.2B in funding in 2021, up 79% from 2020 totals. Funding in all geographies hit record levels in 2021, fueled by the growing need to provide digital solutions and delivery models to patients during the pandemic.

Fintech fears. JPMorgan is planning to up its investment spending to $15B in 2022, including $12B earmarked for technology investments in data centers, cloud computing, and more. That represents a 30% increase over last year, as the banking heavyweight looks to keep upstart fintech competitors in sectors like payments, digital banking, and installment lending at bay. While JPMorgan saw record profits in 2021, the spending surge will likely dent the bank’s profitability in 2022.

Herding instincts. As the global unicorn herd nears 1000, with a $3T+ cumulative valuation, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is looking for more transparency. The agency is considering requiring large private companies to routinely file information about their financials and operations by changing the way companies count their shareholders. While still in the early stages, the SEC’s push will likely face strong resistance from those who argue increased regulation will blunt innovation as well as internal constraints given its already large agenda.

Charging in. Car brands aired 4x more TV ads for electric vehicles (EVs) in 2021 compared to 2020 and 2019, spending an estimated nearly $250M on spots last year. The increase came as supply chain disruptions led to shortages in conventional cars, opening up opportunities for car brands to entice consumers as EV adoption grows.

Growing pains. While China’s GDP grew by 8.1% in 2021 — recovering from 2020’s low base amid strong exports — its plummeting birth rate could threaten its economic growth in the years to come. The country’s birth rate dropped to a record low (7.52 births per 1,000 people), with 10.6M births overall compared to 10.1M deaths last year. As deaths come close to overtaking births, China has been stepping up policies to increase fertility and improve productivity to offset declines in its working population.
